Network Engineer

Sunnyvale, CA

Yahoo! since 2007

Quote:

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only improper clothing." - A quote from my Dad. I grew up competing in downhill ski racing in Europe and was exposed to all kinds of weather conditions early on. What it taught me is there are always different ways to view and tackle life's elements. Even if we can’t change the conditions, it’s up to us to make the best of them.

Favorite Moment(s):

One moment which stands out is my first day at Yahoo!. Meeting so many inspired long-time Yahoos and seeing how well the orientation was organized made the entry smooth and very easy overall. The introduction into the new environment was well done and perfectly represented the things to come. I have been—and continue to be—excited about the work I do and the people I work with.

What have you done to be a better Yahoo?

In my role as a Network Engineer, there are daily opportunities for growth and improvement. My current focus is on Network Compliance. I try to look for tasks which help the overall success of my team and Yahoo!. This may be something small like a process improvement, or something bigger such as working on tools to assist with our daily roles. At the same time, I joined various employee groups, including Running, Women-in-Tech and the Green Team, and met many wonderful fellow Yahoos. These groups build communities which span beyond the reach of our organizations.

Are you able to think big at Yahoo? How?

A big YES! Absolutely. I think BIG, by improving processes and developing tools which will not only help my team here locally, but can be expanded on and implemented globally. It is quite BIG to complete something which improves not only our daily efforts to build and run one of the biggest infrastructures, but also spans all time zones and many cultures around the globe. There are daily challenges which allows for everyone to contribute to solutions and grow as the logical and physical scale grows. It is a very diverse and large-scale network that continually pushes the limitations of today's technology.

What specific Yahoo! project has made the biggest impact on you and why?

There have been several projects in a short period of time which have contributed to some of my great experiences with Yahoo! and had positive impact on me. One that stands out is the implementation of an application that automates many daily functions my team deals with. The tool increases efficiency, reduces turn-around time on low-risk requests and reduces margin of error. It will allow the team to focus on challenges or dedicate time to larger scale projects. Realizing the potential of the application and the business impact this will have for any of my colleagues worldwide is big.

What made you choose Yahoo! as a place to work?

I chose to join Yahoo! due to the scale and complexity of the network. Technically, the environment challenges and stimulates my brain cells as I tackle some of the most complex issues of my career. On a personal level, the fun culture, smart people and relaxed environment is very rewarding and welcoming during those tough times when you need to decompress.
