Bumping into a renowned Machine Learning expert in the cafeteria while he was visiting as a consultant for Yahoo!. At Yahoo!, many of technology’s greatest minds pass through.

What have you done to be a better Yahoo?

As part of a team of researchers tasked to improve Search, I attend many international conferences where I help build strong relationships with universities for research collaboration and recruiting. I’m able to interact with faculty and students, and discuss how their work could impact one of the top search engines in the world: Yahoo!. We are often privileged enough to leverage their academic research to improve Web Search Relevance for my team.

Are you able to think big at Yahoo? How?

Yes, I have to think really BIG. As part of my job at Yahoo!, I am responsible for improving Web Search Relevance in many international markets. This is a tough feat and we need to be innovating constantly. As a result, I foster long-term vision and research creativity within my team.

What specific Yahoo! project has made the biggest impact on you and why?

As the “Universal Machine Learning Ranking (UMLR)” team, our goal is to improve Web Search Relevance across the world with new ranking functions. From my perspective, we made the biggest impact when we launched a new function that covers over 20 markets with significantly positive metrics. We combined new technology from modeling, feature and data. Most importantly, this achievement would not have been possible without the contributions of multiple teams involved.

What made you choose Yahoo! as a place to work?

Having a direct impact on users’ search experience across the globe. That’s the ultimate satisfaction for me—launching a new search function that immediately affects millions of users.
