Know Your Superpower? 5 Steps To Reaching Your Creative Destiny

There will always be mystery in the future, but knowing your talent will help you make it through. And thrive.

When I was 12 years old, I saw Star Wars in the theater at least six times. When I got home from the sixth screening, I ran straight to my mother and said, “Mom, Luke Skywalker knows his destiny and I know mine. My destiny is to help people achieve their creative destiny.” I’ve been lucky to be able to do so ever since. At Yahoo, I spend my days building and empowering our transformative talent, and hopefully I can help you grow your career too.

I think one of the most daunting and compelling things about life is the mystery of the unknown. It’s hard to see the plan for growth when you’re so focused on the day-to-day. The future becomes a far off idea that you can’t quite imagine, let alone figure out how to build.

When I'm speaking with Yahoo employees, I advise them on five simple steps that help clear a path for career growth. These tips help you focus on the big picture, which helps the business succeed, and ultimately helps you succeed. As a self-proclaimed comic book junkie, I’ve appropriately dubbed them . . .

THE SUPERPOWER STEPS TO CAREER GROWTH

1. Know your superpowers.

What are you good at? Chances are you have felt an interest in your superpower all your life. Think about what you love and what you excel at. Think back to your childhood, passions, hobbies, and interests. When you feel “in your zone” and time passes quickly, what are you doing? Capitalize on that. And as Batman taught us, anyone can be a hero--no matter how “super” your powers are.

2. Know who you’re working for and who you want to work for.

Gain an understanding for how the decision makers on your team think. What are they looking for? Why did they hire you? What skills do you need to impress them to get to the next level?

3. Understand their needs and the company’s needs (this is key!).
Depending on the level of transparency in your company, this can be really easy or really difficult, but it is crucial. In order to excel, you must learn the goals of the company, your department and your manager. You can then shape your individual goals around them (and use your superpowers to achieve them).

4. Deliver.
Deliver on the business goals you’ve outlined. By your review, you will have succeeded in meeting the high-level business needs of the company.

5. Take risks to stretch, grow, and learn.

This is just physics. You must be operating above your level in order to be considered for the next one. So don’t be afraid to take on a challenge.

There will always be mystery in the future, and as you work on your career superpowers--both identifying and learning how to use them--you can never know definitively where they will lead you. And you don’t need to. Einstein said that 52% of all great creativity is accidental, so be ready to grab opportunity and own your career development.

Whether your career is just beginning or you’re well into your journey, I hope these tips will help you take ownership, grow, and ultimately lead you to reaching your creative destiny--whatever that may be.

Remember, Bruce Wayne as Batman can't fly, he doesn't transform himself when he's angry. He just fights bad guys. And does a really good job.

Glassdoor Ranks Yahoo! Third in Top Ten Companies

Glassdoor recognized our culture in today's article, Glassdoor Reveals The Top 10 Companies With The Best Business Outlook According To Employees. Based on employee satisfaction, Yahoo ranked third out of the top ten companies for best business outlook.

The article noted that the report is based on companies with "at least 20 business outlook ratings and company ratings during April 2013." Overall, Yahoo ranked above Amazon (#5) and GM (#8).

Here's how the final scores were determined:

"The report comes as a result of the online company review survey that employees voluntarily and anonymously complete, which includes the question: Do you believe your company's business outlook will get better, stay the same or get worse in the next six months?"

Yahoo! employees help make music students’ dream come true

The Yahoo! Employee Foundation (YEF) is a grassroots, philanthropic organization that brings together the talents, time, and financial resources of Yahoo employees to serve the needs of communities around the globe.  Yahoos can not only volunteer their time, but they can work with YEF to champion grants for causes they are passionate about.  

Jill Sewill, a Sunnyvale-based Yahoo, wanted to help 200 music students achieve their dream of seeing a live symphony, so YEF - thanks to donations from Yahoos all over the world - made it happen!  

Check out this wonderful Thank You Video from the Washington Manor Middle School Music Boosters, who received a YEF grant to take a field trip to see the San Francisco Symphony.The kids had a great time, and it’s amazing to see the impact that grants can have when they are targeted through engaged Yahoo Employee Champions!

Yahoo!'s Expansion Plans in Dublin

We are thrilled to announce our expansion plans to the Dublin Operations Center! We will be adding more than 200 new employees in the next 12 months and have already started recruiting for roles in, Ad technology, Operations, Customer support, Human Resources and Finance. This expansion will support our business across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions.

 

We opened the Dublin office back in 2003. For the past decade, what started as a small team has grown into a multilingual and multicultural workforce. Yahoo! Hack Europe: London

Hack days are one of the many ways we actively promote innovation through experimentation around Yahoo!. With that, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming Yahoo! Hack Europe: London on April 27-28, 2013.

This two-day hackathon brings together a wide range of engineers to come together to build out ideas they are passionate about in an atmosphere that inspires collaboration, learning and innovation using the world’s top technologies from both Yahoo and tech partners. This will be our third hack day in London. If you want to hack in an environment where you’ll be both challenged and inspired, this is the place to be.

What it will not be is an ordinary hackathon.

In addition to the staples of swift wifi, tempting treats and sharp troubleshooters, Yahoo Hack Europe: London will stage panel debates on emerging technology trends, host skills workshops ranging from tricks of the trade to geeky crafts, offer a variety of fun and engaging puzzles to stimulate your mind, and fuel your creativity with large-scale interactive games.

  • Two full days of hacking, with plenty of food, drinks, snacks and caffeine
  • High-energy, informative speaking panels and live demos
  • Workshops taught by top developers to level-up your skill sets

Master Inventors at Yahoo!

At Yahoo!, Master Inventor Awards are given to recognize and reward some of the company’s top innovators. The criteria are not just about the number of patents, but also the inventor's contribution to innovation and their capacity and experience in mentorship. We had a chance to interview some of them on their great work and suggestions to junior inventors.


Why is Yahoo a good place for developers and inventors?
Peter Mika: Yahoo! is a great place for inventors of all kinds. Yahoo! Labs in particular is unique in the industry in that it's renown both for scientific excellence externally and for having a huge impact on Yahoo!'s businesses.

Tarun Bhatia: It’s a great place for developers and engineers. There’s much room for creative solutions. We have many interesting problems with the potential of meaningful impact, large amounts of data, adequate resources, and a unique and fun culture. I love how many disciplines we embrace to solve our business challenges – economics, social sciences, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, etc. Each day is like being back in school, only better.

What are you working on now?
Tarun Bhatia: Right now, I’m trying to see if we can real-time assess how we affect a user with each interaction in a session. This has significant marketplace implications. Imagine how effectively we could delight our users and advertisers if every serve-time decision is consciously informed by this assessment.

What advice do you have for more junior inventors?
Ron Jacoby: Find something you are passionate about.  Work to really understand the current state of technology and business of that market. Find the opportunities that exist. Develop your ideas and plan. And never take No as a final answer; use it as feedback to further develop your ideas and pitch.

Tarun Bhatia: Best advice I received was - write it down. Apart from that, encourage yourself to cover a problem outside your area of focus with a fresh perspective. Think of where else your solutions may apply. Do this often.

Ricardo Baeza -Yates:
Do not plan your life. Just do your best and unthinkable opportunities will cross your life path.

: Think simple, think user. Don't think like an engineer or scientist – think about your mom, your kids, would they understand the value of your invention, would they want to use it.

Revving up the innovation engine

This past weekend, we celebrated Yahoo!’s 18th birthday. A birthday is a good time to reflect on the experiences that have helped shape you. This one is no different.

 

That’s why our birthday was the perfect time to bring together Yahoos from around the world for our quarterly Hackday. We created our first Hackday in 2005, bringing some of our most eager minds together in an all-night coding session. I’m proud that this tradition has continued.

Hackdays are special for Yahoos -- as much a part of our history as our birthday itself. Hackers from all over the world come together for 24 hours to create something truly special. The experience is memorable, not only for the eccentricities, but also for the inspiring hacks that Yahoos create. Some hacks have become full-fledged products, like Yahoo! Weather for Android.
 

For our 18th birthday, we decided to turn our Hackday up a notch. We challenged hackers to focus on making our core products more inspiring, entertaining and innovative.

 

We were blown away by the number of Yahoos, diversity of hacks and creative energy. And, in fact, we broke a hack-to-product record by integrating the winning hack into our existing products within just a few days of its victory. This winning hack intelligently helps users find a web page when they have an incomplete URL for that page. Y! Canada News and Y! Sports blog are already live with this new feature.

We also broke another record -- it was our biggest Hackday in the history of Yahoo!. Yahoos participated from nine offices across six time zones, all the way from Sunnyvale to Singapore, and from Norway to India.

 

We’re excited to turn our hacks into products, so stay tuned to see what’s in the pipeline.

Yahoo! UK Festival Fundraiser – Bring Hope to MPS Children

Yahoo! UK finished 2012 with a day that saw the biggest single fundraising day in UK history! Every year, the UK Yahoo Employee Foundation (YEF) team holds a fundraising event to support a charity voted upon by the people of Yahoo! UK. This year, we chose one that was pretty close to our hearts. One of our clients has a son by the name of Bobby who is suffering from Sanfilippo syndrome. Our client knew about our fundraiser from his sales executive and wrote the following:

 

Life-Saving Treatment For Bobby & MPS Children 

"Our son Bobby is 7 years old and was diagnosed with Sanfilippo in December 2008…Sanfilippo is a heart-breaking condition that gradually breaks down children's physical and mental abilities, which means Bobby's development will slowly deteriorate until his body is unable to support itself and he will die in childhood. As you can imagine, it's an absolutely heart-breaking prospect for a parent.
However, there is hope. There is a treatment known to dramatically improve the lives of Sanfilippo sufferers but it hasn't been clinically tested. We need to raise £600,000 to fund a clinical trial, so that Bobby and hundreds of children like him can receive this treatment that could save their lives.
There are 130 families in the UK who have children with Sanfilippo disease. We are getting together with the help of the MPS Society to create Gift Pages for our children to try to help raise the funds any way we can."

With this email, came a flurry of ideas to create a day that would help out Bobby any way we could!  So after a lot of planning and internal marketing we were off!


We held our annual charity silent auction where folks bring in all kinds of items that go up for the auction and some of those included holiday packages, vouchers for local stores and restaurants as well as some big ticket items donated by our clients.  The most unique donation was donated from Josh Stead where he offered to be a “tea boy” for a month.  He just finished his service where he had to fetch and serve tea to James Wildman for a month and it was a giggle for everyone in the office.

We extended our auction to include the first ever Yahoo bake off and we had our own celebrity chef, Martha Swift, founder of Primrose Bakery give her expert judging skills for the heated competition!  Adele Young took the coveted prize for her red velvet masterpiece and folks are still asking her for a repeat performance!



We usually raise around £2500 for our charity but this year folks dug deep and we raised an unprecedented £4000!  Everyone dug deep and it really paid off. Tom, Bobby’s dad was over the moon.

The “Planned giving” page is still accepting donations through the year so if you would like to help, anything would be greatly appreciated.

A big shout out to the UK YEF team again as their tireless efforts helped to raise a lot of money for a very worthy cause.  As the head of UK YEF, I couldn’t be more proud.

Yahoo! Runners Raise Money for a Good Cause

This October, our London’s AdOps and AdTech departments took part in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. In total, our Yahoo runners have raised almost £3,000 to help improve the lives of people with cancer!

Team leader Sheraz Khan encouraged staff to sign up after completing it himself in previous years. "I’d done the run twice before and really found it rewarding," he said. "I thought it would be a great team-building event for both departments and a good way to raise money for charity."

The race, which took place on Sunday, October 7, passed through four of the capital's most beautiful royal parks: Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St James’s Park and Green Park. Participants also took in historic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament.

Training for the event had been a big challenge for the team - six of them had never taken part in any running event before! But everyone made it across the finish line. "The sun was shining, the atmosphere was great, and knowing we were doing this for a good cause really helped us through the pain, the blisters and worn-out trainers," said Sheraz. "In the end we raised £2,700 - way above our target."

Founder of Yahoo! Spain invited to meet Spanish Princess

Our very own Noelia Fernandez, EMEA’s vice president of Media Network, was born 40 years ago in Santander, Spain. Since then, she’s founded Yahoo Spain, become the Director of Products & Services, moved to the European headquarters to become the Head of Audience for the EMEA region, and now leads the Media Network Group for EMEA.

 

40 years ago, another amazing woman was born: Spanish Princess Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. In honor of the Princess’ 40th birthday, Tiempo magazine gathered 12 outstanding women to help her celebrate. Noelia was on the guest list. It was an informal meeting where they shared personal stories of their achievements, and chatted about issues, including the current financial situation in Spain, and the evolving roles of women in the workplace.

 

Along with Noelia, the list included: Inma Shara, orchestra conductor; Laia Marull, actress; Eugenia Rico, writer; Concha Buika, singer; Conchita Martínez, tennis player; Carmen Belén Molina Caballero, Chemical Engineer professor; Montserrat Martí Caballé, soprano; Gema Gallardo, NGO President; Teresa San Jurjo, Foundation Director; the senator María Elena Diego Castellanos (PSOE); and Juliana Fernández Cueva Lominchar (PP, the party in the Spanish Government).


The 12 women were chosen for their amazing accomplishments, each innovators and leaders in their fields. These remarkable women were all in their forties and are winning leaders in their own areas, including literature, music, cinema, sports, politics, culture and the Internet. As a group, they felt that being in their forties is a great age for them, and for women in general, as it’s usually a time when there’s clarity around the paths that they’ve chosen. "I was so proud to represent in that meeting women in technology and business in front of the Princess and that amazing group and explain how what me and many Yahoos everyday that impact lives of many Spanish and citizens around the World,” said Noelia. “Yahoo! is the best place in the world to do that if you have a passion for technology and for content. They all smiled and one told me, Concha Buika, that she comes everyday to our frontpage because she loves our stories."

The appointment of Ms. Mayer, a leading consumer internet executive, signals a renewed focus on product innovation to drive user experience and advertising revenue for one of the world's largest consumer internet brands, whose leading properties include Yahoo Finance, Yahoo! Sports, Yahoo Mobile, Yahoo Mail, and Yahoo Search.

Marissa Mayer was most recently Vice President of Local, Maps, and Location Services at Google where she oversaw product management, engineering, design and strategy for the company's suite of local and geographical products, including Google Maps, Google Earth, Zagat, Street View, and local search, for desktop and mobile. She also curated the Google Doodle program, celebrating special events on Google's homepage around the world.

 

During her 13 years at Google, Marissa held numerous positions, including engineer, designer, product manager, and executive, and launched more than 100 well-known features and products. She played an instrumental role in Google search, leading the product management effort for more than 10 years, a period during which Google Search grew from a few hundred thousand to well over a billion searches per day. Marissa led the development of some of Google's most successful services including image, book and product search, toolbar, and iGoogle, and defined such pivotal products as Google News and Gmail. She is listed as an inventor on several patents in artificial intelligence and interface design.

 

Joining as the company's first female engineer in 1999, Marissa played an important role in developing Google's culture. Her contributions included overseeing the look-and-feel of the company's iconic homepage and founding the Associate Product Manager program, which has hired over 300 of the company's future leaders and is considered the industry's ideal standard in transforming new computer science graduates into executive leaders.

 

Prior to joining Google, Marissa worked at the UBS research lab in Zurich, Switzerland and at SRI International in Menlo Park, California. She graduated with honors from Stanford University with a B.S. in Symbolic Systems and a M.S. in Computer Science. For both degrees, she specialized in artificial intelligence. While at Stanford, she taught computer programming to more than 3000 students and received the Centennial Teaching and Forsythe Awards for her contributions to undergraduate education. In 2008, the Illinois Institute of Technology awarded her an honorary doctorate of engineering.

 

She has been honored with the Matrix Award by the New York Women in Communications, as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and as "Woman of the Year" by Glamour magazine. For four years running, Fortune has named her one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business, including when at age 33 she was the youngest woman ever included on the list.

 

Marissa serves on the board of directors of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. She is also on the board of various non-profits, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Ballet, and the New York City Ballet.

Axis comes equipped with handy features that unify searching and browsing.  For example, our one-step search lets you preview and interact with visual search results without ever leaving the page you’re on. Axis also includes a personalized home page that contains your most recently visited sites, bookmarks and articles you plan to read later.
